Time for a strange mix of styles both dance and music wise with Balbir Singh Dance Company and their work ‘Decreasing Infinity’. We caught up with them at the Fringe in Edinburgh.
The mix of styles we have on show are contemporary dance and kathak for the movement and the music comes from the tabla and beatbox genres. All of this is combined into a duet featuring, wait for it, two dancers! (that’s funny, Ed!)
The company say this much about the work;
“Balbir Singh Dance Company’s Decreasing Infinity explores the mutual attraction, collision and synthesis of Indian Kathak and contemporary dance. An intensely rhythmic male duet with live musicians (tabla, human beatbox)”
Balbir Singh Dance Company have been working now for the last 10 years on works of various kinds. Based in the north of England the company was recently granted NPO status by the big bad Arts Council of England so things are looking peachy for the near future.
Our feature brings you footage from the work and an interview with the company AD Balbir Singh himself.
‘Decreasing Infinity’ is performed by Ezekiel Oliveira and Sooraj Subramanian with choreography by Balbir Singh and music from John Ball and Bigg Taj.
This performance was filmed on August 19 2011 at DanceBase in Edinburgh as part of their ‘Home of Dance’ season for the Fringe.
Production of this video was supported in part by Arts Council England.
