National Dance Company Wales ‘Mythology’

National Dance Company Wales, the national dance company in Wales (just in case that wasn’t clear, Ed!) are back on the road with a new series of works both old and new.

The repertoire will change from venue to venue but when we, here in TheLab™, caught up with them the company were performing ‘Mythology’ by Stephen Shropshire, ‘Tuplet’, by Alexander Ekman and the improbably titled They Seek To Find The Happiness They Seem’ from Lee Johnston.

It’s a rep that offers everything a rep company should, a wide variety of ideas and choreography in a single package. The ideal show for those averse to 3 hour epics with no interval.

The company tell us this much about ‘Mythology’;

In some ways one might consider Mythology a work about a company. It is a work about community, one unified by a common vision and language, coming together to achieve something greater than the sum of its individual parts. It is also a work about letting go.Mythology was made during the last months of Noord Nederlandse Dans, before the company closed its doors at the end of 2012.

The work is the culmination of four years of the company building together a vision, a philosophy of movement, and community of like-minded artists. Mythology stands as testament to that time, reflecting all that is left of that journey, written in a language that has since become its history.

We also bring you an interview with two of the company’s dancers, Chris Scott and Josef Perou, who discuss the work, the challenges of a varied rep and the apprentice programme at the company.

The work is performed by Josef Perou, Camille Giraudeau, Matteo Marfoglia, Mathieu Geffré, Christopher Scott, Natalie Corne, Àngela Boix Duran, Elena Thomas, Joseba Yerro Izaguirre, Declan Whitaker and Eileih Muir.

National Dance Company Wales will continue to tour throughout the Autumn, Check their website for more details.

Filmed at the Dance Lab in Newcastle upon Tyne on September 27th 2014.
